A first-timer's guide to Donghai's crystal markets

Donghai is one of China's best-known crystal trading hubs. The county is located in Lianyungang, East China's Jiangsu province. From lively open-air fairs to indoor shopping malls and a dedicated crystal museum, it offers visitors a fascinating introduction to crystal culture and a great place to find unique souvenirs.

Three must-visit stops

1. Outdoor crystal fair: Experience the buzz

Donghai's outdoor crystal fairs run all year round, according to a traditional rotating schedule based on the final digit of the lunar date. For example, if a fair runs on 'Lunar days 4 and 9', it opens on the 4th, 9th, 14th, 19th, 24th, and 29th of every lunar month. There are many fairs that you can safely assume that there is always one open somewhere in the county, so check your dates carefully before setting off.

Lunar days 4 and 9: Taojing Square Fair (淘晶广场大集), the largest and most comprehensive, with rough stone through to finished pieces.

Lunar days 1 and 6: Quyang Township Fair (曲阳镇大集), the second-largest, strong on mineral specimens.

Lunar days 3 and 8: Benniu Fair (奔牛大集), known for finished bead strands and carvings, with numerous stalls and dazzling variety.

Lunar days 2 and 7: Tiancheng International Crystal Plaza (天成国际水晶广场), a complete range of mineral specimens, rough stones, handmade carvings, pendants and charms, with plenty of one-off pieces.

Lunar days 5 and 10: Xingxi Village Fair (‌兴西村大集) or Yifeng Square (亿丰广场), about 16 km out, where raw stones dominate.

The best time to visit a fair is between 6:30 and 8:00 am. Stalls are generally well stocked, the market is buzzing with activity, and natural morning light makes it easier to inspect the details of each crystal. Many vendors begin packing up around 2:00 to 3:00 pm, so leave the afternoon for indoor shopping and sightseeing.

2. The big shopping complex: China Donghai Crystal City

This indoor mall offers a wide range of products, from everyday jewellery to fine carvings and decorative pieces. There are over 2,000 stores, providing a great variety of choices to compare quality and prices.

For expensive purchases, ask about professional gemstone testing services listed on the fourth floor of Pavilion 2, and verify the testing centre's credentials and certificate procedures.

3. China Donghai Crystal Museum: Discover crystal wonders

Donghai Crystal Museum is open Tuesday through Sunday from 9:00 am to 5:30 pm and is closed on Mondays.

Across the road from the crystal city, the museum showcases rare specimens and crystal carvings from China and around the world.

Beyond their visual appeal, the exhibits offer a chance to appreciate how natural inclusions, crystal formations, and skilled craftsmanship contribute to the character of each piece. A museum visit can also help you make more informed choices when returning to the market.
